Forget Next-gen, what about the Last Generation? .hectate 07/18/2006 - 18:32 EST Ok, scientists love computers, we all know that. What they are learning is that they love computer games too! A recent study uses the oh-so-popular Freecell (I never liked it) to tell if seniors are "cognitively healthy" or on the way to developing the beginnings of Alzheimer's disease. From the article: "It requires significant planning to play well, and planning is one measure that neuropsychologists attempt to test in clinical situations," Jimison said. "We're trying to replicate that, and we've been able to show that we can, at least in early studies with small numbers of people, show distinctions between cognitively healthy elders and those with even mild cognitive impairment."Maybe that's why I never liked Freecell. I prefer to play by the seat of my pants instead of planning ahead. I never could really enjoy chess and Tetris is a game of chance (albeit a fun one). The games that I enjoy involve thinking on your feet. Games like Counter-Strike and BF2 where you don't know what's around the corner, but you're on a hair-trigger and ready to kill at a moment's notice. Maybe these scientists should use some of these FPS games instead of NSFW card games for their studies. I bet they could get Old Grandma Hardcore in on it too that way. I'd sign up to play video games. I'd sign up twice if they paid too. By the way, Clerks II opens this weekend. I recommend seeing the first movie, aptly named "Clerks", when you have the time. I don't know if it is necessary to have seen the original to understand the sequel (as the way of some movies are). I do know that if you have not seen the original, you are missing out on one of the Great Things of Life. Let me know what is up, drop by Blackmage's forums. You could send me an email if you desired, but I'm afraid my response time is vastly slower through that medium. Catch ya later! |
